Rules and Guidelines

Deadline for submissions: December 31, 2010

General Rules for the Matters Most Extraordinary Project

  1. Stories should be based on real history, and should feature historical characters and/or historical events. The outcome of these events cannot be changed. (For example, if you are focusing on a pivotal battle in history, you may alter the details of how the battle is fought, but you may not change the historical outcome of the battle).

  2. The reason for the supernatural powers is not to be definitively explained in your story, although characters may form their own opinions as to the source of their powers. (For instance, the abilities of a Greek hoplite cannot be explained by saying that they were given to him by an alien, but a Catholic priest can believe that his powers were a gift from God.)

  3. Existing religions cannot be attacked. Religious events that are the foundation of their religion may not be the target of stories, but apocryphal religious events that are not foundational to their religion can be used. (For example, it is not acceptable to say that Jesus performed miraculous acts because he was a human with superpowers, but the Crusaders' vision at Antioch is an acceptable topic).

Introducing Matters Most Extraordinary!

The truth is often stranger than fiction. Some events in history defy explanation, even today. Some historical figures have been so legendary that it almost makes you question if they were superhuman.

This is the question asked by Matters Most Extraordinary.

Our goal is to create an online anthology of stories that examine historical events and characters from a fresh perspective. The thread tying these stories together is simple: what if various people thoughout history have possessed superpowers?

Contributors are encouraged to give this theme their own unique interpretation. We are interested in famous historical figures (eg. George Washington, Napoleon, Einstein) being given superpowers, but we're also looking for creative depictions of more minor personages. You are even welcome to create your own characters, though if you do not focus on historical figures your story should still have real events as a backdrop.

Of course, our project still needs some ground rules, and a few are given on our guidelines page. Our rules are straightforward: in essence, they are: 1) Don't change the outcomes of historical events; 2) Don't definitively explain the source of the superpowers; and 3) Don't focus on events that are central to an established religion.

We plan to release this anthology for free online, in a PDF and HTML format, sometime in the second half of 2010. We have no set timetable, and the release date of the Matters Most Extraordinary anthology is dependent on the submissions that we receive.

Feel free to ask, either here or through email, if you have any questions.

Happy writing!
